To ensure quality power supplyBREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- Crews from Electric Company of the North (EDENORTE) are working on the renovation of the networks in Santiago, in order to ensure that its residents have the optimal supply of energy.
Due to this work, which is being divided into two phases, there will be electrical suspensions from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 12 noon.
The EDENORTE technical team reported that these tasks will continue for about three months and upon their conclusion the residents in Santiago will enjoy reliable electricity.
A spokesperson for EDENORTE announced that the current state of the electricity distribution networks have considerable deterioration due to years of use. This leads to an increase in failures and service restoration time, which translates into considerable technical losses, dissatisfaction of costumers and reduction in the levels of quality in the area
.
He added that this project aims to standardize the structure of the networks, simplify maintenance, reduce operating costs, increase security and improve the quality of service

Café La Cumbre
To offer to tourists and residents of Santiago healthy recreational spacesBREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- Several institutions, led by the Ministry of Environment, the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra and Association for Development signed an agreement yesterday for the revival of the Ecological Park Café La Cumbre.
To begin the improvements to the infrastructure, the environment minister, Jaime David Fernandez Mirabal, made an initial contribution of one million 400 hundred thousand pesos.
Mr.Fernandez Mirabal said he hopes that tourist agencies can promote the space as an attraction for tourists from the north coast.
The agreement was signed by Monsignor Agripino Nunez Collado, rector of the PUCMM ; Eduardo Trueba, from the Apesi ; Elli Ramirez of the Ecological Society of the Cibao, and Fausto Burgos, from CODOCAFE. Mr. Nunez said he hoped that the Ministry of Public Works would be interested in the future in the reconstruction of the Gregorio Luperón tourist road.
The aforementioned entities are committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure that the park, as well as other cultural monuments along the tourist trail, will be ready as quickly as possible.One of the motivations of the multi-sector partnership is to redo the space where the former mansion of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo is located, to allow the people in the communities of Santiago and Puerto Plata a place to come in direct contact with nature.

With support from the Strategic Development CouncilBREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- As a way of enriching the territorial identity of the municipality, the Council for Strategic Development of Santiago is working on the creation of an urban heritage tourist route in the historic center of town.
The tourist route is part of the City Marketing Plan, and it will provide an area where tourists, as well as those from the community and visitors from other parts of the country, will be able to learn more about the Historical Center and its structural icons.
The Latin American Centre for Strategic Urban Development (CIDEU), which is based in Barcelona, Spain, recently selected the project Urban Heritage Tourism Route
to showcase the Fifth Seminar Completion of the Specialization in Urban Strategic Planning taking place in Antigua, Guatemala.
The project was developed by the urban planner Nolberto Batista, coordinator of the Communication and Information Strategic Plan of Santiago.
Mr.Batista explained that the idea will allow areas of town to be worked into the theme of environmental and cultural management, most notably the Saltadero Jacagua, the Northern Mountain Range and other historical and ecological niches of the municipality.Mr.
Batista added that this plan will bring changes to the passive and isolated views of the architectural elements, transforming them into real economic resources, thus providing a more dynamic view of the cultural heritage of the city.The project was selected by the CIDEU due to the importance of tourism and cultural issues for the city of Santiago and Latin America.

Melanio Paredes visits the city of SantiagoBREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- At least two million 876 thousand students begin classes next Tuesday, the 17th, in more than 99 percent of campuses nationwide. This was announced during a ceremony at the Liceo Las Caobas, in Santo Domingo, by Minister of Education, Melanie Paredes.
Mrs. Paredes said that next Tuesday the students will return to find the schools painted and fixed up, because the Ministry has repaired about 25,000 classrooms nationally in the last 17 months.
The official said that the Ministry will address all problems that arise before or after the start of the school year. An announcement will be made Tuesday, in the presence of the United Nations, as to the future of the school breakfast program.
Mrs. Paredes said that about 65,000 teachers participated on Monday in a training day for the new tools that will make the difference from traditional practices that have taken place in the Dominican school system.
The next Thursday we will be launching our multimedia website that will represent the educational revolution in the Dominican Republic and as I said, we still have schools that we are rescuing from the nineteenth century, but that does not stop us from teaching in the XXI century with a generation of young people, children and adolescents who demand quality education services in a century that presents us with serious challenges
, said the official.
The minister also announced that some 12,000 teachers will benefit from the incentive pay based on qualification and years in service.

Commemoration Festivities are heldBREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- The Committee on Homeland Anniversaries, and governmental authorities in the province of Santiago, commemorated the 147th anniversary of the Restoration of the Republic by holding various events.
The activities began with the raising of the Flag in the front yard of la Fortaleza San Luis, followed by a Te Deum
, chaired by the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Santiago, Monsignor Ramon Benito De La Rosa, and finally the placing of a wreath on the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration.
The activities were led by Juan Daniel Balcácer, chairman of the Standing Committee for Homeland Anniversaries, the provincial governor, Nidia Bisonó de Tavares, the outgoing mayor José Enrique Sued, and the Regional Director of Education, Isabel Ureña
Mr. Balcácer described the restoration as the most momentous political and social achievement in nineteenth-century Dominican history.
It was the crystallization of the Duartian national independence project, and also had a strong international impact, because the victory meant the defeat of a European colonial power by the Dominican people. The triumph of the Dominicans was the inspiration for both the Cubans and Puerto Ricans in their struggle for independence

Juan Daniel Balcácer said the National Commission on Homeland Anniversaries works in conjunction with other government institutions to uphold the memory of all major national events so that the population doesn´t lose sight of its history.
The Regional Director of Education, Elizabeth Ureña, called on Dominican students to copy the example of the Heroes of the Restoration.
In attendance at this activity were: the director of the Central Cibao Regional Police Command, General Luis Alberto Then, the head of the Second Infantry Brigade, Manuel Perozo Castillo, director of Information Press and Publicity, Grey Nunez, deputy director of the National Civil Defense, Francisco Arias, as well as other civilian and military officials.

The deliveries start in the southern suburbs of SantiagoBREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- The Endowment Fund of the Reformed Enterprises (FONPER) distributed 125,000 notebooks to needy students throughout the country.
The donations were made first in the southern districts of Santiago and will cover communities in Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macoris, San Cristobal, Bani, and Boca Chica.
The president of FONPER, Fernando Rosa, said the move is part of social policy implemented by the Government of Dr. Leonel Fernandez for the benefit of Dominican education.

In time for the championship celebration January 11thBREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- The Ministry of Public Works yesterday began renovations to Cibao Stadium, which will be completed before the championship celebration on January 11th, for the Winter Dominican Baseball season, which is being dedicated to the memory of Jose Lima.
Garibaldy Baptist, from the Baptist Contruction company, along with the president of the Aguilas Cibaeñas, Winston Chilote
Llenas, will be in charge of the general supervision of the conditions of the ball field.
The renovations to the stadium were ordered by the Minister of Public Works, Victor Diaz Rúa, on orders from the President, Dr. Leonel Fernandez Reyna.
The Dominican Government hopes to have all the sports facilities in top shape for the first singing of Play Ball

Cibao Stadium will have extensive renovations done to its lighting system. Similar work was performed last year at the Estadio Quisqueya, to bring it up to the standards of the major leagues.
The field itself will be leveled, and treated with chemicals to control weeds and diseases of turf and to get it ready to handle the stress of the coming season. There will also be placed impermeable protective padding on the walls that surround the playing area.

Recommends that people prune treesBREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- The Prevention, Mitigation and Disaster Response agencies in the province of Santiago were put on alert due to the possible heavy rains that may hit the country in the wake of Hurricane Earl, which has already caused considerable damage on the island of Puerto Rico.
Institutions such as the Red Cross and Civil Defense, have urged residents in the vicinity of rivers, streams and creeks, to be on alert for any warnings issued by authorities.
They also recommend that the population in general activate the emergency plan in each household by cleaning their patios, pruning trees and anything else that might impede the free movement of water.
The authorities pointed out that the announcement made by the National Meteorological Office, is that this hurricane could bring heavy rains for the next 48 hours throughout much of our territory, therefore, we, as a relief agency, are alerting and calling onthe public to remain vigilant
.
The alert, issued by ONAMET, includes the areas from La Romana to Cape Engaño, and from Cape Engaño to Samaná, but new information may become available and so its best to stay attentive.
The committee of the province of Santiago is composed of; the Red Cross, the Fire Brigade, Civil Defense and City Hall, among others.
