BREAKING NEWS: Santiago de los Caballeros.- President Leonel Fernández on Tuesday oversaw several works developed by the Government for an amount exceeding 100 $ million, including the construction of the North Avenue, a polytechnic school of 48 classrooms and paving streets.

The first agent noted the progress of work of the North Avenue, a work constructed by the Ministry of Public Works at a cost of 117 $ million.

The Head of State was accompanied by the Minister of Public Works, Díaz Rúa, who provided explanations on the path that should be completed within 20 months.

It will run for 24km and is one of five stages that form the VIADOM project.

The work of the Avenue North Santiago de los Caballeros are headed by the Dominican Consortium of Ways (DOVICOM).

This is a four-lane road, which will go south of the city of Santiago to the north without interruption, thus preventing passengers travelling to and from Santo Domingo had to pass through the centre of the city.

The President also visited the area Pekín where he has been found in advanced construction of the Polytechnic School in the area, made for an amount of 120 million pesos for the first step.

The new Economic restaurant meanwhile been built for 308 815 $ pesos and can produce 72 000 rations of cooked food in one day from 8am.

The Presidency assists more than 100 000 people in the region of Cibao

BREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- The Presidency of the Republic, through the Social Plan, developed since October 27 and until now about sixty simultaneous operations of distribution of food baskets, helmets for motorcycle taxis and financial aid to cover hospital costs from a 1000 families living below the poverty line in seven provinces of the Cibao, with an investment of 10 million pesos.

The aid was delivered by the General Director of the Social Plan of the Presidency and the Minister of State Emigdio Sosa, to local authorities for distribution to residents of affected communities.

Based on the estimated stats that each family in the country has five members, the authorities of the Social Plan establishes the distribution of 2748 quintals of food has benefited over 100 000 people in the provinces Espaillat (Moca), Juan Sanchez Ramírez (Cotui), Monte Cristi, Dajabón, Santiago Rodríguez, Valverde Mao-y Duarte (San Francisco de Macoris).

At Cotui, the Government has distributed 2 957 895 pesos in raw foods or 1071 quintals to 10 000 families. The Social Planning authorities have estimated that an average of 50 000 people will get feed with the aid.

In Moca, 200 motorcycle taxis were given helmets as part of the Government campaign aimed at reducing the accident rate among workers of public transport.

Similarly, 11000 families residing in the provinces of Santiago, Rodriguez and Valverde-Mao received support in raw foods and baskets for pregnant women, for a total of 3 405 000 pesos.

Tourist map of Santiago is launched

BREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- With the support of the Cultural Foundation Fortress Museum St. Louis, the tourist map of Santiago has been launched. It contains information and graphics of the main interests points of the city and its surroundings.

The map was presented by the General of the National Army, Gustavo Jorge García, president of the Foundation, and Mary Calderon, author of the cartographic work, and other members of the foundation, at a lunch in the restaurant Montaña Integral.

Jorge Garcia highlighted the importance of this map, since Santiago did not have a tourist map presenting the great historical and cultural wealth of the city.

Mary Calderon said that the tourism plan was a means of communication to guide the Dominicans and foreigners who visit Santiago, and added that no country in the world should let the visitors arrive in a city without a map that helps them identify the most interesting points of it.

She also explained that it was a map with photos of the most beautiful tourist places in Santiago, which was available to visitors in travel agencies, the Fortress of San Luis, at the Cibao International Airport, in hotels, rental cars and other tourism establishments.

BREAKING NEWS: Santiago.- The arrival of the Dominicans at the Cibao International Airport has increased in 2009 compared to 2008, according to the director of that entity, Víctor Suárez.

We prepare ourselves, we’ve doubled the number of people who work here and this will enable us to offer a better service to our passengers, he said.

Mr. Suarez has attributed this increase to improved living conditions of many Dominicans who lost their jobs because of the crisis.

The President of the Cibao Airport said he expected for the Christmas season an increase in the number of flights from various U.S. cities.
