Preventive measuresSANTIAGO.- The aid organizations of the various provinces of the northern area began yesterday the preventive preparations to face the arrival of the hurricane IKE; which should move close to the Dominican northern coast during the night from Saturday to Sunday.
In the province of Montecristi, 34 shelters were set up if a several atmospheric phenomenon of category 4 hits vulnerable localities and sectors.
The shelters are installed in schools, churches, communal centers, clubs, municipal council premises and other buildings of state institutions.
The director of the Civil defense of Montecristi, Máximo Ventura, said that this institution conceived a plan which will be implemented in case of emergency.
We are taking all the precautionary measures necessary to prevent that the inhabitants of this zone are affected by the new hurricane
declared the civil servant.
The precautionary measures also include the provinces of Puerto Plata, Dajabón, Santiago Rodriguez, Mao, Valverde, Hermanas Mirabal, Santiago, Espaillat, María Trinidad Sánchez, Samaná, and La Vega.
Among the organizations which take part of the emergency plan there are the Navy, the Public Health, the National Police force, the Red Cross, the governments, the town halls, as well as community and districts organizations.

The strong downpours of Ike could cause risingMoca. - The remnants of the hurricane Ike cause strong rains on the Northern Cordillera which constitutes a serious threat for people residing the river banks, informed the Provincial director of Civil Defense Alejandro Sánchez.
It is now that the effects of the storm can cause damage in the districts of the down town of Moca, because it is down pouring in the mountain and it may cause the river rising,
explained Sánchez.
He alerted the Community and asked to continue to adopt precautionary measures because there are still several provinces, including Espaillat, which are maintained in Red Alert.
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) maintains 17 provinces in a state of Red Alert and yellow for the rest of the country, because of possible penetrations of the sea and the risk of floods and river’s risings caused by the hurricane Ike.

Equipped with a communication systemSANTIAGO. Fifty motor bikes arrived to Santiago and will be incorporated in the prevention patrols in order to decrease the rise of the delinquency.
The chief of the Regional management of Central Cibao, the brigadier general, Eduardo Alberto Then, informed that these vehicles will help to fight the delinquency in the districts and the urbanizations.
Then explained that these bikes are equipped with a communication system, with a laptop which could be directly connected to the central data base of the National police and that in few minutes, one will be able to obtain or provide information on any person arrested for infringement.
The policemenl who will drive the motor cycles received a rigorous training so they can answer with speed and effectiveness in this process of prevention and combat against the delinquency.

The most important event of the Northern zoneThe XXI version of Expo Cibao 2008 starts this year with the slogan « Energy for a competitive country » and the expectancies around it can be calculated in high figures.
The organizers await the participation of 225 companies in 500 modules, the mobilization of 350 million pesos and the visit of 250 thousand people in the sports complex of La Barranquita, from this Wednesday to Sunday September 21.
Taking energy like topic for the realization of the fair was not an easy decision.
The president of the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Santiago, Ricardo Fondeur, supported that the idea is to give a more integral direction to the electricity problem, which goes from the framework of the economy to the structural reforms and the social responsibility.
The editions of Expo Cibao were successful since the first exhibition in 1998, which took place in the Catholic University Madre y Maestra and which exhibited the regional and national production.
Four years later, the expo was selected for participating in the 500-year celebrations of the discovery of America.
From 2001, breeders were integrated and they represent now 40 percent of the sector of the fair.
The same year, the Deputies Chamber of Dominican Republic granted recognition to Expo Cibao for its honorable task for the benefit of economic development and employers’ of the country.
This year, it will have 30 percent of new participants coming from all the fields, informed Iván Reinoso, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce and Production of Santiago
The executive director of the Strategic Plan of Santiago, Reinaldo Peguero, sees the Expo Cibao like a political, commercial, economic and urban icon which must be strengthened and protected.
The president of the Association of Industries of Santiago (Airen), Lina García de Blasco, said that part of success of Expo Cibao is due, from an economic point of view, to the fact that it joins together hundreds companies and makes it possible to support products and to generate commercial contacts, like knowing the new market trends.

More than 400 thousand visitorsSANTIAGO.- With the participation of more than 300 national and foreign companies, Expo Cibao terminated successfully yesterday.
The fair, organized by the Chamber of Commerce and of Production of Santiago with the slogan Energy for a competitive country
; was visited by more than 400 thousand people, according to the organizers.
During the closing ceremony, the president of the Chamber, Ricardo Founder, underlined the success of the fair and thanked the employers’ and industrial community as well as the public for their support.
Founder took the opportunity to solicit the Government to seek an urgent solution to the electrical problem.
Expo-Cibao was opened 5 days, during which guided visits for the schools and the colleges were performed to develop different dynamics and to support the company spirit in the young people.
According to the organizers of this marketing activity, the public who attended the event answered the offers of the companies of all the participating sectors.

To face the future challengesSANTIAGO. - The president of the Association of the Tradesmen and the Industrialists of Santiago (ACIS), suggested to the Government that it assumes a tax and monetary discipline, because of the uncertainty of the economy generated by the financial crisis of the United States.
Luis Núñez said that we are living an alarming economic situation, not only in Dominican Republic, but on a world level
. He recalled that a banking bankruptcy occurred within the five greater financial institutions of the United States.
The president of the ACIS highlighted that financial institutions of the United States had been able to exceed the crisis of 1929, but that they did not endure the present one. All these difficulties will affect us, especially with regard to the money sending to Dominican Republic
, supported the employers’ leader of Santiago.
The employers’ leader s’ is referred to the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and said that the Dominican economy has not been able yet to benefit from the occasions of this trade agreement. However, he supported that all the efforts will be made so that the industry, trade and other productive sectors can benefit from the DR-CAFTA.

Sierra PlanSANTIAGO. - The tenth day of new trees planting in the mountains of San José de Las Mats started in the presence of the executives of the Popular Bank, organization which brought 20 million pesos to the Sierra Plan.
The banking organization will provide a similar sum during the next 10 years as contribution to the conservation of the natural resources and the safeguarding of the water.
The planting of the trees started with a ceremony which takes place in the seedbed of the Sierra Plan in San José de Las Matas in the presence of the authorities of the Popular Group and of the Sierra Plan, as well as of hundreds of employees of the banking organization.
The words of opening of the event were pronounced by Alejandro Grullón, president of the Sierra Plan, who with anecdotes reported how his family took part in the foundation of the Sierra Plan.
He said that the investment made by the Popular Bank through the Sierra Plan with the sowing of new trees is a way of returning to nature the benefit that this one grants to the man through its natural resources.
He stressed the fact that the part played by the Popular Bank in the protection of the environment belonged to the commitment of this organization to take part in the Global Agreement of the UNO which guarantees the support of the sustainable development of the environment on the whole planet.
